Photo information
If you grant Photo Library access, Elsewhere reads photo dates and available location metadata on the device to suggest country days and past trips. Photo contents and exact coordinates are not uploaded by Elsewhere. Suggestions remain subject to your review.
Location information
If you grant Location access, Elsewhere may use the current location to identify the current country. If you separately permit background access, the app may receive low-power visit and significant-location-change events to suggest missing country days. Exact coordinates are discarded after country lookup. Country-day evidence is stored locally and may be included in private iCloud sync when you enable it.
Data collection and sharing
We do not receive your travel history, photo library, location evidence, or usage analytics. Elsewhere does not sell user data or use it for advertising or tracking. Optional iCloud storage is provided by Apple as described below.
Apple MapKit may communicate with Apple when maps are displayed. Apple handles that communication under its own privacy policies.
Storage and deletion
Approved travel history, planned trips, manual corrections, traveller assumptions, and country-level location evidence are stored locally. Removing data from this device does not delete copies already stored in iCloud or exported backup files. Settings provides a separate, confirmed action to delete all iCloud data and recovery points. If iCloud is unavailable, deletion remains pending until it can complete. Photo and Location permissions can be changed at any time in iOS Settings.
Optional iCloud sync and recovery
When you enable iCloud sync, Elsewhere uploads country-day history, planned trips, traveller assumptions, country-level evidence, and recovery points to your private CloudKit database. Sync records also include revision and deletion information. Recovery points identify their source device. Photo contents and exact photo or location coordinates are not included. Apple stores this data under its own privacy and security terms; we do not receive a copy.
Elsewhere retains changed daily recovery points for up to 30 days, plus up to five recent pre-restore or pre-resolution copies, subject to a 100 MB cloud budget. Older copies may be pruned after a new copy is verified. The newest valid recovery point is retained. Up to five local safety copies are also kept. Cloud recovery points use iCloud protection, not your exported file backup passphrase.
You can turn sync off in Settings. Turning it off does not erase existing cloud copies. An Apple account change pauses sync before existing local history can be uploaded to a different account. Restoring a backup previews the changes and creates a local undo copy before replacing live data. With sync enabled, confirmed restoration changes can reach your other devices.
Encrypted backups
You can export a passphrase-protected backup. Encryption takes place on the device before iOS presents the file destination. Elsewhere does not store the passphrase, and we do not receive a copy. A file backup placed in iCloud Drive or another provider is handled under that provider's terms and privacy policy.
Children
Elsewhere is a general travel utility and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when Elsewhere's functionality changes. The effective date at the top identifies the current version.
